Who Will Win the Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes looks like a replay of the Kentucky Derby with 8 Derby veterans coming together for the last stage of the Triple Crown. Animal Kingdom, the winner of the Derby and runner up at the Preakness, looks like the early favorite as he has been given a 2-1 morning line. But the sleeper within this race is Brilliant Speed. This horse was in 14th place of most of the Kentucky Derby due to an uncharacteristically bad start. Brilliant Speed was forced 8 wide at the first turn—making his race perhaps the longest one of any of the Derby runners. Still, Brilliant Speed was able to work his way up to 7th place by the end of the race. This went pretty much unnoticed by television viewers thanks to the excitement generated by Animal Kingdom upfront, but Brilliant Speed had an even more impressive finish to the Derby than the winner did. If Brilliant Speed had a better position, he would have won the Derby.

As a result of this, Brilliant Speed needs to be included in your exotic wagering. The horse has a tremendous amount of ability and is flying under the proverbial radar. And with a morning line of 15-1, it is hard to not like this horse. Even if the public catches on to his ability, it is unlikely that he gets odds worse than 10-1 thanks to only running a 95 Beyer at the Derby while Animal Kingdom ran an impressive 103.
