Zenyatta and the BC Classic

Saturday marks the beginning of the end for Zenyatta. Her second to last race will be the Lady’s Secret Stakes at Hollywood Park. This Grade 1, $250,000 stakes race will merely be a tune up for the last race of her illustrious career, the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs. The Classic will be held on the second day of the Breeders’ Cup card, Saturday, November 6th.

Zenyatta is thus far undefeated throughout her career, an impressive 18-0. This includes a win in the 2009 Classic where she was the first ever female to win the race. Trainer John Shirreffs is hoping that she will repeat. This would mark another first for the BC- Zenyatta would become the first horse to win three BC races, a distinction that Goldikova is attempting this year as well in the BC Mile.

This year’s Classic will be much tougher. Horses predicted to run the race include Blame, Lookin at Lucky, Quality Road, Rail Trip, Richard’s Kid, Twirling Candy, and Espoir City. These potential horses will give the race much depth in a race where the winner will probably be the frontrunner for the Horse of the Year award.

Zenyatta’s career as a racer may be nearing an end, but her breeding career is yet to begin. Who knows what kind of offspring Zenyatta will have, but if they are anything like the dam, they will sell for a very large amount.
