Who Will Win the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is quickly approaching. The two favorites—Bodemeister and Union Rags—have broken away from the field with their estimated morning lines. Bodemeister has been given odds of 4-1 and Union Rags is at 9-2. These two horses have tremendous speed, and their post positions are going to play to this strength. Bodemeister is in the 6 slot while Union Rags is in at #4.

Gemologist is a strong #3 choice. With his post in the 15th position, this could be a huge benefit to the 6-1 choice. Gemologist has tremendous late speed and with his far outside position, there is a strong chance that he will be in contention at the end of the race—assuming he sets himself up in a good position by the final turn. With so much speed to his inside, this shouldn’t be too hard to accomplish. Saturday’s Kentucky Derby marks the start of the 2012 Triple Crown series. Other than the three above-listed horses, no other mounts have odds lower than 10-1.

Gemologist might be only the #3 choice amongst bettors, but he has run some of the most impressive races of all the horses involved. Bodemeister might have the more recent win, but Gemologist has never lost a race. Also, his speed figures keep getting faster and faster as the distance increases. As the Kentucky Derby will be the longest race of career, this is a good sign. The Derby is notoriously hard to predict because it is such a long race for the three year olds involved, but Gemologist has given every sign that he likes the longer distances. This should prove to be a good race for him, especially if the speed horses in front of him take the race out too quickly.
