Ice Box is Burning

Ice Box appears as if he will be running in the Travers Stakes next Saturday. Trainer Nick Zito had the horse work five furlongs, where the Kentucky Derby runner-up ran an impressive 1:00.09 split for the workout. Zito is taking this as a sign that the horse is ready to perform at his top level once again.

The horse has had a rather disappointing set of races after the Derby. Ice Box ran for eighth place at the Belmont Stakes, and then finished sixth in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth. Zito is hoping that these poor races are simply the result of the grueling distances of the Triple Crown races.

The Grade 1 Travers Stakes has a $1 million purse and attracts some of the top horses in the nation. Run at the Saratoga Springs racetrack, the Travers is the highlight of Saratoga’s annual meet.
