Another Pick 6 Carryover and other Del Mar News

Despite being open for only a few days this season, today’s card at Del Mar features yet another pick 6 carryover. The extra payout this time is $103,938. On Thursday, July 29, Holding Her Ground had an upset victory in the seventh race. The horse ended up paying $54. Since no one with a would-be winning ticket had chosen her, the carryover was extended to today’s card.

The Pick 6 begins with the third race on Friday’s card. The Cougar II Handicap is included in this card and will take place as the seventh race of the day. Richard’s Kid, the 8/5 morning line favorite, will be skipping tomorrow’s San Diego Handicap so that he can race today.

Del Mar has been the subject of scrutiny yet again, as a rider was injured during a training run. Jeff Bloom, an exercise rider and former jockey, was injured in a single horse spill that resulted in a trip to the local hospital. He was conscious and speaking when he was taken away.

The question regarding the safety of the new track surface remains. Was this a fluke accident, or was it caused by the same problem that track officials attempted to fix last week?
